How Do I Keep Moving Forward In Recovery During The Chaos Of Summer

While summer is a time of fun and relaxation, it can also be a time when eating disorder urges or behaviors can increase.

Here are some tips to help you continue your progress in recovery during the summer if you find yourself struggling to maintain motivation!

Keep a regular schedule of activities and eating
It can be easy to want to sleep in until noon, especially on vacation, but it's important to make sure you have a consistent schedule. Not having any plans or schedule can feel freeing, but can lead to missing meals or wanting to isolate. One of the first steps to starting a routine is to pick 2-3 things you can commit to doing each day and general times you plan to eat.

Find time to play, but make sure you get enough rest
It's important to have time to unwind! Schedule rest days or even chunks of time alone to recharge. It's okay to say "no" to plans (even fun ones!) when you know you need to rest.

Practice flexibility
Unexpected things happen when you travel or even when you're hanging out with friends. Sometimes a flight may be delayed or you may have to eat meals later than expected. Keep your cool and know that you are capable of handling change. Notice your emotional responses and take time to check-in with them before making any quick decisions.

Choose clothes that are comfortable and fit your body
It can be tempting to cover up in baggy clothes when you go outside, but you will likely be hot and miserable. Get rid of clothes that no longer fits properly and take time to choose clothes that fit your body, even if you are still struggling to accept it.

Make it a priority to attend sessions with your team
Even if you feel like you are doing well, continue to meet with your doctors, therapists, and dietitians. Maintaining consistency in treatment is one of the best ways to continue moving forward. Those sessions can also be a great time to process stressors that come up and help keep you on track!

I hope these tips help as you continue to enjoy your summer!
