Self-Vulnerability

When our Art Therapy Group was given the prompt of vulnerability, I tried to come at it with a different perspective.

Instead of using art to express vulnerability with others, I focused on being vulnerable with myself. My creation is of a mirror with shattered glass revealing a collage of colorful patterns. The mirror represents the front I wear by not feeling my emotions, but Renfrew has taught me to not discriminate against my emotions because they all serve a purpose.

The glass is shattered because I am slowly improving at letting my emotions show and feeling them completely. Maybe one day there will be no glass at all so that I can feel all my emotions and be truly vulnerable with myself.

Hannah's artwork is featured in The Renfrew Center Foundation's 2019 Art Calendar. Each piece of artwork in this calendar was selected because it contains a deep truth that is illuminated in beauty through the visual language. The pieces were chosen from thousands of compelling works of art that have been created in art therapy groups at The Renfrew Center. To order your copy, please click here.
